Sungrow Inverter Procurement Checklist: 7 Mistakes I Now Check Before Every Order

Here's the short version: this is a seven-step checklist. Every step has a checkpoint. If a step doesn't apply to your project, skip it. But if you're in the middle of a procurement and haven't answered all seven, keep reading.

Step 1: Write the Exact Sungrow Inverter Model Number

Sungrow's 2023 solar inverter shipments reached 130 GW globally, according to their 2023 annual report. That's serious scale, and it means Sungrow makes a lot of inverters. A search for "sungrow-inverter" can return ten different models before you find one that fits your project. I am not saying the shipment number is irrelevant. I am saying it doesn't design your string layout.

If your quote says "Sungrow 110kW" without a model number, that's a red flag (note to self: never order that way). The SG110CX and the SG350HX, for example, don't share the same DC input limits. You need the exact model, DC input voltage range, MPPT strings, AC output configuration, and communication options.

Checkpoint: The order line includes the full model number, not a product family.

Step 2: Verify the Grid Code Version and Utility Approval

Grid compliance isn't a once-in-a-lifetime feature. As of early 2025, some North American utilities are rejecting inverter firmware versions that were accepted a year earlier. If you're buying from distribution stock, ask which firmware is loaded and whether it matches the latest type certificate.

Look for UL 1741 SB/SB2, IEEE 1547-2018, and the local utility's specific interconnection requirements. "It was fine on the last project" doesn't get you through a new permit review.

Checkpoint: The supplier can provide the current grid-code certificate for the exact firmware version you'll receive.

This is where the industry has changed. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven't changed—match the product to the site and the utility—but the execution has transformed.

Step 3: Compare Landed Cost, Not Just Price

I once saved $1,200 by choosing a distributor with a lower price but no local service partner. Then a small commissioning issue required a technician to fly in. Travel, per diem, and delayed schedule cost us $4,800. Net loss: $3,600 plus a client who was not happy (which, honestly, was the more expensive part). That's the definition of penny-wise, pound-foolish.

When you're comparing quotes, include freight, duties, commissioning support, spare parts, and the cost of downtime if something fails.

Checkpoint: You have a landed-cost estimate that includes a realistic commissioning failure scenario.

Step 4: Check String Sizing and DC Input Voltage on the Actual Site

This sounds basic, but it's where I made my first major mistake. I said "we need a 110kW inverter." The supplier heard "any of their 110kW models." We discovered the mismatch when the delivery arrived and the DC input voltage didn't match the existing combiner boxes. The rework cost more than the inverter.

Before you order, run a string sizing calculation with your panel spec, temperature range, and cable losses. If your project designer gives you a model number, verify it against the site's layout. Don't trust someone else's spreadsheet.

Checkpoint: The inverter's MPPT voltage window matches the string configuration at the coldest and warmest temperatures for the site.

Step 5: Ask About Spare Parts and Lead Times Before You Need Them

It took me three years and about 150 orders to understand that vendor relationships matter more than vendor capabilities. The best inverter on paper can't help you if the replacement board sits on a boat for six weeks.

Ask the distributor: What's the lead time for a spare communication board? Is there local stock? Do they have a technician who has actually opened this model? If the answer is "we'll email the factory", that's not a lead time.

Checkpoint: Your PO includes agreed response times for technical support and spare part dispatch.

Step 6: Plan Battery and Backup Generator Connections on Paper

If you're buying a hybrid Sungrow inverter, the battery interface, CTs, and backup wiring all need to be on the same drawing. I've seen people order the inverter and forget the meter accessory. That's a week of schedule delay for a small piece of plastic with a board inside.

One question that comes up a lot is how to connect a battery charger. It sounds simple, but in a hybrid system the connection order matters. We tripped a system once because the battery was connected before the DC bus was stable. The inverter wasn't damaged, but the commissioning sequence had to be reset, and we lost a day.

They are not substitutes for a fixed inverter and a proper transfer switch. The final step is also the most boring. When the inverter arrives, verify the serial number against the PO, the firmware version against the certificate, and the packaging for damage. Take photos. Save the commissioning report.

I once processed an order with the wrong communication module because the warehouse label said "Sungrow inverter" and nobody opened the box. That error cost $890 in redo plus a one-week delay. Now every delivery goes through the same check.

What I Still See Go Wrong

My experience is based on about 140 C&I projects up to 2 MW. If you're working on a 200 MW utility plant, some of the utility and financing steps are different. I can't speak to that segment from direct experience.

Three mistakes keep showing up:

  • Treating "sungrow-inverter" as a single product. It's a brand with many product families. The 130 GW shipment number tells you the company has scale. It doesn't tell you which model fits your site.
  • Ignoring the difference between grid-tied and portable. The Costco Solar Generator and the Four Patriot Solar Generator have a place, but you can't run net metering through a 12V socket.
